So, over the past half a year, I've been telling My Dad that I want (really need) a new piano. My mom feels the same way too. It's a little frustrating for us because we have more than enough money to buy a new grand. I think he's finally starting to warm up to the idea thankfully. So, I say all this to say that I calculated how many NA miatas you could have for the price of the piano I want. 2? 4? Nope. 8! About 8 near perfect condition miatas. I've played on pianos that cost more than an Audi R8 V10, Nissan GTR, Porsche 911 turbos, etc. It is a little crazy how much pianos are, but what ever.

Piano costing more than R8 V10. Holy shit.
Then again, I have a friend who has a violin worth something like 300k.

Any single or number of cars > Piano.
Sorry, no offense to you, but if it came down to it (for me) to spend $XX,XXX on something, its going to be a car.

The storks really screwed me over with all the stuff people get from their parents on here! If I played piano I'd have to make one out of 8 junk miatas :P

Well, I can't drive yet. And my little brother and mom also play, so it's gets more use than just one person.

A concert grand piano will set you back $100-300k and up.

Yes. Those pianos are quite exquisite. Does eh use the violin for everyday practice?

Damn, I'm glad I play an instrument that goes about $4k for a good, professional grade one.

I think she does actually. Girl's family is loaded. She has a house in India and her own pet elephant!

Well, this would be the second one. The first one my moms parents bought for her when she was young. I also learned on that one. Then the second (current one) is a steeping stone until my mom and I can decide which one we really like. She also takes lessons.

Hahaha, I have a piano friend who is really loaded over the top, but she nice and doesn't act like the typical rich person.

Neither does this girl! You'd never know they were rich either. Her mom drive a Honda Fit and her dad a Mazda Protege. Live in a house about normal sized for where we live.
Then she shows you the pictures of her mansion in India and her riding her pet elephant...

I play trumpet professionally, and a new horn would cost about $3k right now. More for some of the specialized horns. But I'm still playing the first horns I ever got, one of which is 36 years old. If it ain't broke....

Short answer, no. I'll be able to take lessons for another 4 years until I go to college. My mom will probably take lessons as long as she can. My little brother is planing to play until he goes to college (10 years). So, it'll definitely get used, which makes it worth it.

Well, the girl I'm talking about is a little more showy. Her dad drives an RR Autobiography, and her mom drives a loaded LR4, but in general, she more down to earth than the super rich people I know.

My family sold a 1923 Model L (6') Steinway, completely restored, about a year ago. Gawd, I hated to see that go. For over 2 months we had some of the best pianists in the area coming through to play it and then plead their case for why we should lower the price so they could afford to buy it. It was agonizing to decide who got it. The folks who wanted it at full asking price were only looking for an ornament. The people who would play it and enjoy it's sweet sound could not afford the real value. We wound up selling at a much compromised price to a pianist. Plenty of good feels, though. We all sleep well knowing that we did something for the arts and not just the wallet.

That sounds great. Steinways are great to play on. My piano teacher has a 1930s 7' Mason and Hamlin, great piano. It had $20,000 of restoration done a few years back. The bass on that piano is amazing! I don't know if you've heard of Vladimir Horowitz, but I had the opportunity to play on his 9' Steinway about 2 years ago at Immaculata university. That performance on his piano was among my best ever.

Inspiration comes in many forms. Yes, I have heard of VH. I am still happy that we opted to sell it to someone who will play it. I hope you continue your love of music throughout your life.

New pianos are tempting, but no piano store will ever have as good a deal as the Idiot On Craigslist Selling His Piano For A Sixth Of Its Value (that should provide some insight on how I became the owner of a mahogany 1999 Petrof IV with a Renner action).
